India Blocks Telegram Over NEET Exam Leak Concerns

India has enacted a temporary ban on the messaging application Telegram, citing security concerns related to the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). This administrative action follows reports of a leak involving question papers for the medical entrance examination used for undergraduate admissions across the country. Indian government officials allege that candidates utilized the platform to defraud or cheat during the exam process. The ban is currently in effect as authorities address these allegations regarding the integrity of the testing materials.

Authorities have specifically identified Telegram as a conduit for academic dishonesty within the context of the assessment. The ban remains in effect while the current examination cycle proceeds, serving as a precautionary measure against further alleged interference with testing materials during the period of the evaluation.

A previous iteration of the test was officially cancelled by government authorities due to allegations of widespread paper leaks. These allegations triggered widespread protests across various regions in India.

In response to recent exam cancellations, a satirical youth protest movement known as the ‘Cockroach Janta Party’ has been formed. This group emerged amidst the broader situation related to the examination system.

Regarding the future status of the messaging application, government officials have indicated that the ban is not permanent. The Indian government intends to unblock Telegram once the current exam has concluded.
